How To Choose Your Wedding Photographer

I may be biased, but I believe that choosing the person who will tell the story of your wedding day is one of the more important decisions in the wedding planning process. There are multiple options out there, but I’m here to help you navigate your choice with a few helpful things to think about when narrowing it down!

 1.    Style

First, take a look at the Photographer’s editing and colour style. Are their colours and tones what you are looking for? Every photographer has their own touch on how they edit their final images, so make sure your preferences match theirs. Some might be a little bit brighter, or a little more moody, and others might be a little more desaturated – the possibilities are endless and all that matters is that you like it! You can easily get a feel for this by reviewing their online portfolio/social media, and you’ll want to make sure it is consistent throughout an entire sample wedding day!

2.    Approach

Next, you’ll also want to make sure that you and your photographer are on the same page when it comes to their approach behind the lens. Are they very structured with only posed images, or do they take a more laid back and candid approach to documenting your day? While each wedding day calls for a bit of variety, you’ll need to make sure that you like the “feel” of the images they produce as well. Asking about their approach is a great question to raise when you meet with your final photographers in the running!

3.    Experience

Your wedding photography experience should be nothing but a great one! Chat with your potential photographer about what you and your fiancé can expect from your time with them (from start to finish). Of course it’s important to discuss what’s included in your package, but also some of the little things along the way (ex. turnaround times, galleries, album + prints, etc). Every photographer will offer a different experience, but knowing this ahead of time can help set some expectations and help you make the right choice for you!

4.    Reputation

This is a big one! You and your fiancé will want to be sure to review the words from past clients before making your final decision. Check out the photographer’s Google Reviews, or see if they have a Testimonial section on their website! The best way to learn about a vendor’s service is to hear directly from the people who have worked with them in the past! This goes hand in hand with referrals or testimonials from friends or family. If you can’t easily access their reviews – just ask where you can find some!

5.    Compatibility

Above all, you want to make sure that you and your photographer jive on a personal level! It all comes down to whether or not you get a great vibe from them and feel completely comfortable and confident in their abilities – after all, you’ll be trusting them to document some of your biggest moments! And remember… your photographer is likely going to be the vendor you spend the most time with on your wedding day – so make sure you’ll be happy to have them around and they’ll fit in as one of the gang!!

There is so much to consider when you’re narrowing down your options for wedding photography, but hopefully these few tips can help you on your hunt to invest wisely and have no regrets! If you have any extra questions, I’d be more than happy to help!
